THREE TALENTED FOLKS are coming to town on March 1st. They’ll be Marquette’s newest artists-in-residence.
Its the continuation of a three year program started last year designed to bring artistic and digital talent to our community, and expose Marquette to the rest of the country.
The three chosen this year, after selection by a committee of Evolve Marquette, are Rachel Smith, Christoper Thompson, and Julie Benda.
“I could use hyperbolic language in describing our artists,” says Josh MacIvor-Andersen, the president of Evolve Marquette, “but I’ll simply say they are incredibly creative and accomplished, and they are super excited to come here.”
Smith is a fiction writer from Washington state. She’s been a lecturer and fellow at Stanford University. She’s working on a collection of short stories and a novel.
Thompson is a photographer who’s been working in New Mexico and Colorado. His photos have appeared in the New York Times and Outside magazine. He’s hoping to capture the essence of Marquette through portraits he’ll be taking of residents while he’s here.
Benda is a mixed media artist out of Minneapolis–working in print, installation, sculpture, graphic design, and illustration. She’s working on content for an exhibition at the the American Swedish Institute this fall.
The three artists will be spending their three months here at One Marquette Place, the brand new high rise apartment on Lake Superior.
Coincidentally, Breesa Culver, one of last year’s artists-in-residence, will also debut her podcast, State of Superior, on March 1st. It’ll be a ten part series on the UP that she researched and assembled during her stay in Marquette.
