BEEF-A-ROO in south Marquette is history. It shut down over the weekend, then was sold officially on Monday.
The new owner? Mike Henricksen, a Michigan Tech grad and Munising businessman who owns Bay Furnace Bagels in Munising.
So…bagels at the new site?
“We haven’t decided yet what we’re going to do there,” Henricksen says, though he tells you it will be a restaurant of some sort.. “There are a lot of options out there, including bagels.”
Bay Furnace has a good product and has been well-reviewed by its customers in Munising, but here it would sit almost across the street from the Huron Mountain Bakery. They are a bit different. Bay Furnace emphasizes breakfast and lunch sandwiches, along with bagels, while Huron Mountain is something closer to a more traditional bakery.
Bay Furnace features a wide selection of lunch and breakfast sandwiches.
And then there’s also Third Street Bagels across town.
A lot to think about. Henricksen says he anticipates re-opening in three to six months. Meantime, plenty of work to do, but he thinks it will be well worth it because of the daily traffic volume on US-41.
“The building’s old,” he says. “We have to bring it up to code. We have to get greater efficiency. We’re replacing the old walk-in cooler.”
He’s got other businesses to tend to, as well–a pontoon rental shop and real-estate development firm in Munising, along with a family ranch in Colorado. And, of course, the bagel shop in Munising.
Now, it’s just a matter of deciding…bagels or no bagels in south Marquette?
