DOWNTOWN ISHPEMING GETS a welcome injection of life on Saturday, March 14th. Two pm, to be exact.
That’s when the Cognition Brewing Company will officially open its doors in the Tap Room of the old Mather Inn. It’s been two years in the making.
They’ve been working out the kinks for the last few weeks and have now brewed 1300 gallons of what they call “premium product.” That should be enough to get a party started.
Cognition will be the sixth microbrewery in the Marquette area, following in the footsteps of the Marquette Harbor Brewery at the Vierling, Black Rocks, the Ore Dock, the Jasper Ridge in Ishpeming, and the Chocolay River Brewery at the Bayou in Harvey.
We’re not exactly Grand Rapids yet, but the growth is pretty impressive. A few years ago, we had only two brew pubs in the area.
As for Ishpeming, it’s languished for years. It’s been an old mining town with empty storefronts scattered amid tired-looking shops, bars and restaurants. But some of those shops have gotten a facelift lately, the historic Gossard Building has been re-invented with an array of classy shops, and now Cognition is returning the old Mather Inn Tap Room to life.
Longtime believers in Ishpeming have never given up on their town.
Here’s a toast to Cognition and to the (hoped-for) revival of downtown Ishpeming.

ONE OF THE tenants of the Gossard Building, Revisions Design Studio, is expanding to Marquette.
Remember the old Farmer Q’s location on Washington Street? You know, where Ron’s Taco Shop was going to relocate, until it wasn’t? Well, that’s where Revisions is setting up its new shop.
A soft open is scheduled for March 16th. A grand opening will come in April.
It should be an interesting place–handcrafted lighting fixtures, planters, dishware, jewelry, furniture. Owner Michele Dugree, an NMU grad, has been designing her housewares for the last seven years and has seen her business grow online and at the Gossard.
Her work has been displayed in New York, Tokyo, Australia and Canada. She’s filled orders for wholesalers like Target. She’s a small town girl hitting the bigtime.
But what she does best is take old items–heirlooms or something old and seemingly useless–and transforms them into something new, beautiful, and one-of-a-kind.
Sounds like a gratifying job. Sounds like a store Marquette shoppers will welcome.
We’ll just have to continue getting our tacos off the taco trucks.
(Update: Ron’s Taco Shop reopened in the lower level of the Masonic Building on Washington Street. It’s not a permanent home but it is now open for business.)

TALK ABOUT A quick turnaround.
Jessica and Company, the hair salon on Third Street, closed up shop on Friday, and after a frantic weekend of moving, will reopen on Tuesday at its new location at 335 West Washington Street.
That’s the former location of ReBlossom which recently relocated a few blocks east. The game of musical chairs continues downtown.
Why the change for Jessica and Company? Jessica Pesola, who’s run the salon for eleven years, just says it was time for a change. She’ll have a bigger space at a busier location. She’s planning on hiring a couple of new employees.
It’s more than a hair-cutter, by the way. The salon also offers hair extensions, eyelash extensions, spray-tanning, massage, manicures, pedicures, and body-waxing. That takes care of just about the whole body, right?
Oh, they also offer the Brazilian Blow Out system. Hunhh??
