IT’S NOT QUITE a done deal yet, but Superior Walk-In Center is set to buy the old Bonanza Steakhouse property on US-41.
Plans call for the new clinic to open by July of this year.
Permits still have to be granted and the new owners, of course, will have to undertake extensive renovations of the building. It’ll take some work to convert a restaurant structure into a medical clinic.
The sun room at the restaurant apparently will be eliminated in the renovation.
This is an expansion for Superior Walk-In Center which operates two other clinics in Munising and at the Upper Peninsula Medical Center on Fair Street. There are no plans to close the Medical Center facility which caters to an NMU student population, among others.
Walk-in clinics are designed to fill a need between the traditional doctors office and an emergency room.
The new clinic will be located only about 1-2 miles up the highway from the location of the new UP Health System hospital, set to open there in about two years.
Bonanza closed down almost exactly two years ago after 37 years in business, and has remained up for sale ever since.
