EVER HEARD THE term “hygge?”
It’s Danish, describing a feeling of warmth and coziness, often associated with wintertime.
Well, apparently, Marquette is the most “hygge” city in the nation. That’s according to Livability magazine.
We’re described as one of the snowiest cities in the U.S. in the bucolic Upper Peninsula.
Quote: “Marquette’s clever winter-proof planning means there are miles of winter pedestrian paths, so thick blankets of snow will never stop you from gathering with friends…”
Some other “hygge” cities? Stowe, Vermont, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Anchorage, Alaska.
YOU PROBABLY MISSED it.
Our very own Anna Dravland, the young woman dealing with the after-effects of a stroke and the slowness of government in dealing with her disability claim, was mentioned in the Washington Post last week.
The story listed her as one of the many victims in the partial government shutdown, specifically because of the delay in getting her disability claim approved and her need to start a gofundme campaign.
That campaign, by the way, has raised nearly $14,000 which will insure her financial security for several months, but she’s still struggling to find a permanent place to live–an inexpensive home that will allow her to keep her service dog.
She’d been hoping to get into Grandview Marquette. No luck. The only available apartment was nearly $800 a month. She can’t afford it without running out of money before the end of the year. The search goes on.
She’s also been unable to get her food stamps this month, apparently because of the shutdown.
Nevertheless, her appreciation for her 148 donors is never-ending.
AND OF COURSE, there’s our cake-making media stars.
Joe Heck of Huron Mountain Bakery and MaryBeth Kurtz of Midtown Bakery.
Their big night comes on Monday, January 21st, 10 pm, on the Food Network. They’ll be competing with three other cake-making teams on “Winner Cake All.”
If you’ve seen an earlier episode of the show, you know it’s well-produced. And fun. The personalities pop.
The Food Network, needless to say, can expect huge ratings in Marquette County on Monday night.
