NMU released a statement earlier today announcing that President Fritz Erickson has asked that the FOIA fees be dropped, and that the materials requested by The North Wind be provided as soon as possible.
The statement comes after two days of growing outcry over the situation, in which the student newspaper was being charged $300 for a public records request for several university emails. (You can read the original story here: https://wotsmqt.com/battle-at-nmu/).
NMU says they waived the fee to demonstrate their commitment to an open administration and to minimize any further misunderstandings. NMU claims that they asked The North Wind to pay the FOIA fees because such a request requires the use of university resources.
