THE SPECULATION ABOUT new mining deposits being discovered in northern Marquette County has been confirmed.
Lundin Mining Corporation, which operates the Eagle Mine outside of Big Bay, says that exploratory drilling two kilometers east of the current Eagle deposit has “intersected a new zone of high-grade and semi-massive nickel-copper sulphide mineralization.”
Translation? They found more of the same stuff they’ve been mining for the last several months.
Further translation? They’re probably going to drill at this new location and that could mean they might stay here at Eagle Mine for longer than eight years.
Quote from Paul Conibear, president and CEO of Lundin: “We are excited to have discovered new zones of high-grade mineralization so close to the existing mine, and we look forward to ramping up our exploration campaign for the remainder of the year.”
He sure sounds pretty doggone enthusiastic.
Some of us will cheer. This could mean more jobs.
Some of us will boo. This will further tear up the environment.
Let the accusations, counter-accusations, and hand-wringing begin.
